Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba to Receive
the Otto Hahn Peace Medal

The United Nations Association of Germany (UNAG), Berlin-Brandenburg Branch, will award the Otto Hahn Peace Medal in Gold to Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, the Chairman of the Middle Powers Initiative and the former Mayor of Hiroshima and President of Mayors for Peace. The April 16, 2013 ceremony will recognize Dr. Akiba for his outstanding efforts for peace, humanity, and international understanding at Deutsche Bank Atrium in Berlin.

Dr. Lutz-Peter Gollnisch, President of the UNAG Berlin-Brandenburg, said, “Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba will be awarded with the Berlin Peace Medal for his exceptional and lifelong dedication for nuclear disarmament. I would also like to emphasize, that Dr. Akiba forges new paths by including the regional and local level into his work.” The Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, will present Dr. Akiba, who is also currently Professor of Hiroshima University, with the Peace Medal.

The Otto Hahn Peace Medal was founded by Dietrich Hahn to commemorate the promotion of peace and humanitarian commitment of his grandfather, the nuclear chemist, Nobel laureate and honorary citizen of Berlin, Prof. Dr. Otto Hahn.

The Otto Hahn Peace Medal was first awarded in 1988. Former prize winners include Mikhail Gorbachev, Simon Wiesenthal, Sir Karl Popper, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Gerd Ruge, Miriam Makeba, Mary Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Hans Küng, and Daniel Barenboim.
